Great piece! Don't worry though since I know a lot of people who use percentages when referring to something, even to their own feelings.
A bit weird a couple years ago when I've first encountered this 'phenomenon' but it's quite easy to describe anything, your stance as an example, with numbers. It's logical.
I totally agree! I did my masters thesis in epistemic logic using numbers between 0 and 1 to represent strengths of belief (which is partly why I wrote this). I just think it is a shame that despite the fact we all sort of recognize this is the case, we find it so easy to forget it in everyday life
I believe most people usually think that you can only be either 'for' or 'against' when they are making their stance since socially speaking, there is often pressure to stand up for what you believe in (no matter how unsure you are) or just let it go. Everything seems to be black and white. Also, not all situation offers enough time for critical thinking and/or gray area.
Anyway, your discipline is super cool and I have to look up waht 'epistemic logic' means, lol. I have a different field of study and I just recently gotten into Philosophy that's why I found your channel. I guess I just want to stay that I've been following your uploads on Dostoevsky and Nietzsche, especially on their works that I am currently reading. Can't wait for the next upload, btw.
Hey Jo. I write AI Made Simple on Substack. I love your work, and would love to have a conversation about possibly working together. Lmk if that interests you

I'm impressed you've come to this idea yourself if you have. If you, like myself and others, like to improve your meta-thought-machine then let me recommend https://www.lesswrong.com/ to you; You might be interested in reading the sequences.
You seem like the type of person to greatly benefit from the steps of those who came before, and a natural member of the rationalist diaspora. Not the strawman of rationalism that I've seen in your videos either. Though if I'm not wrong, like myself, you are a thespian and passionate man as well - but no worries, they are not just compatible but synergistic.
I'd be interested in having any sort of discourse with you as well - it is always a good thing when I meet someone else who is piecing together a mind that patterns itself in accordance to truth in such a nebulous universe, and moreso when we disagree.
Love this. I did my undergrad in math and economics (philosophy minor) so I'm always hyperaware of making room for opposing realities that I know to be logically possible when evaluating my own beliefs and discussing them with others. I consider it more like thinking in probabilities rather than thinking "logically" which to me implies that we're building from a set of premises we can count on to be true, which is almost never the case in real-world discussion. As we know, in most worthwhile questions, there exists far more than one rational line of thinking available, often with oppositional conclusions, gifted to us by the ambiguous nature of reality. I think to some this way of holding beliefs can come off as rather wishy-washy, but (~probably~) ultimately leads to gentler, more fruitful conversations where, if nothing else, maybe each party can find common ground somewhere in their mutual uncertainty. And if there isn't uncertainty on either side, you can (likely) feel safe taking the conversation with a grain of salt.
Your videos can make us critical and philosophical in a time of political conformity and helplessness. Unlike a chair, an idea can be shared by a whole people. The particular is the concreteness of the universal and the universal is the vision of the particular. If you are bored with life, learn a little philosophy. We can go beyond everything past and present in the power of hope -Jurgen Moltmann
Opinions are often just tentative, and even prompted by the need to oppose what seems like an over - rigidly held position one might otherwise agree with, or... partially. In any case, one would expect views to change or modify over time after extended consideration, fresh insight, or added information.
Honestly I do feel like the communication of ideas and the understanding of others both personal belief systems and perpetuated philosophies would be way more widespread and less negative/pushed back against if people could just admit they also don’t 100% know what they’re talking about. I’ve heard people use words like “nuance” and then follow with a sentence which highlights that they definitely do not know the definition of nuance. The nuances of nuance.
However there is also the argument that people must remain firm in their beliefs in order to hold true to themselves/the personality they’ve created/their dignity, but I feel like realistically openness to admit commitment on a scale like you said would genuinely benefit political and religious discussions especially!
Unsolicited advice is a great site -makes you think. And I was wondering: does Boethius have any advice, insight, suggestions for the pain you suffer in the knowledge of or as a witness to others' suffering? That can be harder to rationalize and bear because it's so, damn, big, and it's out of your control. You can shut it down, I suppose, in various ways, but you don't have the comfort, the moral/ethical satisfaction, peace of mind, or sense of mastery that would ensue from bearing personal pain. No?
There are beliefs that are hard -wired to temperament: I have been a socialist since I became aware of the world, situations, and positions, at about 2 and a half, and I was a democratic socialist then - even though I didn't know the words - and I am now at an advanced age. BTW, the "uneasiness" about death in my case is based largely on the fact I will not know how things turned out. Maybe I was a cat in a previous life?

I’m 100 percent sure this is the correct way

What people think they are sure about and what they are willing to bet their life is the case, are two different animals.

I wonder if this will ever make a comeback
